Frequently Asked Questions

Tree Service Questions

How much does tree service cost in Little Rock?

It depends on the tree's height, its condition, what it is near and how easy it is to reach. National 2026 guides from HomeGuide put most removals between about $200 and $2,000, with very large trees higher, and Homeyou's 2026 Little Rock figures put trimming a medium tree at about $365 to $543. Stump grinding usually runs about $100 to $400 per stump. We give a written price after seeing the tree, and that price is what you pay.

Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in Little Rock?

For a tree on your own home lot, usually not. Little Rock's landscape chapter exempts single-family and two-family zoned lots of two acres or less, but the Public Works FAQ says a permit is required for clearing land or cutting more than seven trees in one year. Any tree in the public right-of-way or on city property needs a permit from Parks and Recreation before it is removed. If you are in an HOA or a historic district, check those rules too.

Will Entergy trim or remove a tree near my power line?

Entergy Arkansas maintains trees along its primary lines from pole to pole. The service line from the pole to your house is the customer's responsibility, so trimming around it is a job for a tree company, and Entergy says it can temporarily disconnect service at no charge so the work can be done safely. Entergy also does not pick up debris from storm damage or customer-requested trims. For a tree on a primary line, call 800-368-3749.

Is there a tree service near me that can come out after a storm?

If you are in Little Rock or the nearby towns, call (501) 457-9035 and leave the details any time. Storm calls are sorted by danger, so a tree on a roof, a blocked exit or a limb hanging over a walkway gets looked at before a tree lying across the back lawn. If a tree is touching a power line, stay away from it and call Entergy first.

When should trees be trimmed in central Arkansas?

Many shade trees are easiest to prune in late winter while they are dormant, when the branch structure is easy to see and before spring growth starts. The University of Arkansas extension service says spring-flowering plants such as redbuds and dogwoods should be pruned right after they bloom. Dead, cracked or storm-damaged limbs should come off whenever you find them, without waiting for a season.

What will the city pick up if I keep the brush?

Little Rock collects yard waste weekly, on the business day after your garbage day. Limbs should be under six feet long and no more than six inches in diameter, stacked within five feet of the curb, and leaves and twigs go in bags, boxes or cans under 30 gallons and 50 pounds. Bigger wood from a removal is usually hauled off by the tree company or cut to firewood length for you to keep.

Should I remove a pine that is turning brown?

Act quickly if it is. Arkansas forestry guidance says pine bark beetles favor stressed trees and that infested trees with green, yellow or red needles should come out, while cut pine should not be left next to healthy pines where beetles can move into them. Not every brown pine has beetles, since needle blights and drought also discolor pines, so it is worth having the tree checked before deciding.

Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal after a storm?

Often it does when a tree falls on the house, a garage or a fence, but rules differ from policy to policy, and a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything may not be covered. Take photos before anything is moved and call your insurer early. We can give you a written, itemized estimate to send with the claim.

Tree Removal Questions

How much does tree removal cost in Little Rock?

HomeGuide's 2026 national figures run from about $200 to $500 for a tree under 30 feet to $850 to $2,000 for a tree 60 to 80 feet tall, with pines at about $250 to $1,600 and oaks at about $300 to $2,500. Trees over a house, dead wood and steep or fenced-in yards push the price up. We give you a written price after seeing the tree.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my property in Little Rock?

Usually not for one or two trees on a single-family lot of two acres or less, which Little Rock's landscape chapter exempts. The Public Works FAQ says clearing land or cutting more than seven trees in one year requires a permit, and any tree in the public right-of-way needs a permit from Parks and Recreation. HOA covenants can add their own rules.

Is a dead tree harder to remove?

Often, yes. Dead wood breaks unpredictably, so it cannot always be climbed or rigged the way a live tree can, and it may need a lift or a crane instead. In central Arkansas heat, dead pines and oaks dry out and weaken quickly, so taking a dying tree down sooner is usually easier and safer.

Can you take down a tree that leans over my neighbor's yard?

Yes. The limbs over their side are cut and lowered on ropes so nothing lands where it should not. We may need to stand or set ropes on their side, so let them know before the work day. Make sure the tree is yours, since a tree on the line or on their property needs their agreement.

Can I keep the wood?

Yes. We can leave logs in rounds or cut to firewood length. Oak makes good firewood once it is seasoned. Wood from pines with bark beetles should be moved away from living pines or hauled off, since beetles can leave cut logs and attack healthy trees nearby.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions

What does tree trimming cost in Little Rock?

Homeyou's 2026 Little Rock figures put trimming a medium tree at about $365 to $543. HomeGuide's 2026 national ranges run from about $250 to $700 for trees up to 30 feet to $1,000 to $2,500 or more for trees over 60 feet. Big oaks over a house land toward the top of those ranges. Your written quote is the price.

When is the best time to prune oaks in Arkansas?

Late winter, while oaks are dormant, is the usual choice for structural pruning: the leaves are off and wounds have the spring to start closing. Dead or storm-broken limbs should come out whenever you find them. Light clearance pruning can be done most of the year.

Is topping a tree ever a good idea?

No. Topping cuts large limbs back to stubs, which leads to decay and a flush of weakly attached sprouts that break easily in ice and wind. Little Rock's code prohibits topping for trees along public roadways. Crown reduction, which shortens limbs back to a healthy side branch, gets the size down without those problems.

Can you trim around the power line to my house?

Yes, once it is safe. Entergy Arkansas says the service line from the pole to the house is the customer's responsibility and that it can temporarily disconnect service at no charge so a contractor can work near it. We coordinate that disconnect before trimming near the line. Lines on the poles along the street are Entergy's to clear.

How do I prune a crape myrtle without ruining it?

Remove suckers at the base, crossing and inward-growing branches, and old seed heads you can reach, and leave the main trunks intact. Avoid cutting the trunks back to the same height every year; the extension service calls that crape murder. Late winter, before new growth starts, is the usual time.

Stump Grinding Questions

How much does stump grinding cost in Little Rock?

HomeAdvisor's 2026 national guide puts the average stump at about $250, with most between $120 and $500, or roughly $2 to $5 per inch of diameter. Extra stumps on the same visit often run $40 to $75 each. Big pine and oak stumps, rocky ground and hauling chips add to that. We price each stump in writing.

How deep do you grind a stump?

Usually several inches below the soil, which is enough for grass to grow over the spot. If you want to plant a new tree or set pavers there, we can go deeper where the ground allows. Rock under the stump, common in west Little Rock, can limit the depth, and we tell you that before starting.

Will the roots keep growing after grinding?

Most trees will not regrow once the stump is ground out. Some species, sweetgum among them, can send up root sprouts for a while. Grinding the main surface roots and mowing the sprouts as they appear usually ends it.

Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?

Grinding is digging, and Arkansas 811 asks both homeowners and contractors to call before digging. We make the locate request ourselves before a grinding job. Utilities then have two full working days to mark their lines.

What do I do with the hole?

You can leave the chips to settle and rot, but the spot will sink over time. For a lawn, most people have the chips removed and the hole filled with topsoil, then seed or sod it.

Emergency Storm Tree Service Questions

What should I do if a tree falls on my house in Little Rock?

Get everyone out of the damaged part of the house, stay away from any wires, and call Entergy if a line is involved. Take photos before anything is moved and call your insurer. Then call (501) 457-9035 so the tree can be lifted off in pieces and the roof tarped.

How much does emergency tree removal cost?

GoTreeQuotes' national figures put a tree on a house at about $1,500 to $6,350, averaging $3,950, and HomeGuide notes urgent work often costs two to three times a scheduled job. Big trees, heavy roof damage and crane work cost more. You get a written price before work starts.

Will Entergy remove a tree that fell on my power line?

Entergy handles the line itself and clears trees from its primary lines, but it says it does not pick up debris from storm damage. Once the line is safe or de-energized, the rest of the tree is a job for a tree company. Never cut a tree that is touching a line.

Does the city pick up storm debris?

Little Rock's Public Works FAQ says residents can report storm debris through 311 and crews are dispatched to remove it, and after past storms the city has collected trees and limbs and turned them into mulch at the Little Rock Landfill. Regular curbside pickup only takes limbs under six feet long and six inches thick, so large trunks usually leave with the tree crew.

Is a tree that survived the storm safe?

Not always. Cracks at forks, hangers caught in the crown, and soil heaved on one side of the trunk are all signs of hidden damage. Have those trees looked at once the urgent work is done, before the next round of storms.

Pine Tree Removal Questions

How much does it cost to remove a pine tree in Little Rock?

HomeGuide's 2026 national range for pine removal is about $250 to $1,600, and taller trees over 80 feet can run $1,200 to $2,500 or more. A 70-foot loblolly over a house costs more than the same tree at the back of an open lot. We price each pine in writing after seeing it.

How do I know if my pine has beetles?

Look for small white or cream globs of pitch on the bark, fine reddish-brown dust in the bark crevices or at the base, and needles fading to yellow or red. Ips beetles often fade one or a few limbs first. If you see those signs, have the tree looked at quickly, since beetles can spread to nearby pines.

Should I remove healthy pines near my house?

Not necessarily. A healthy, well-rooted pine can stand for decades. Removal makes sense when the tree is declining, leans toward the house, has a damaged top or roots, or is simply more risk than you want over a bedroom. We will tell you honestly what we see.

Can I keep the pine wood for firewood?

Pine burns fast and leaves creosote, so many people do not want it. If the tree had beetles, the wood should not be stacked near living pines. Most pine removals in Little Rock end with the wood hauled off and the brush chipped.

Why are my pine needles brown but the tree seems fine?

Needle blights such as brown spot are widespread in Arkansas pines, and drought can brown needles too. Those problems are not always fatal. If the bark shows no pitch tubes or boring dust and new growth is green, the tree may recover.

Tree Health & Hazard Assessments Questions

How do I know if a tree is dangerous?

Warning signs include large dead limbs, cracks in the trunk or at a fork, mushrooms or a cavity at the base, a new lean with soil heaved on one side, and sunken dead bark. One sign alone does not always mean removal. What matters is how serious the defect is and what the tree would hit.

Can an oak with hypoxylon canker be saved?

The disease itself has no cure, according to the University of Arkansas extension service. A tree that is still structurally sound can be kept with dead wood pruned out and care to avoid more stress such as soil compaction or root cuts. If the trunk or main limbs are weakened and the tree is near a house, removal is usually the safer choice.

Is emerald ash borer in Little Rock?

The Arkansas Plant Board added Pulaski County to its emerald ash borer quarantine area in 2014, and neighboring Saline County had confirmed infestations by 2016. Federal surveys counted 44 of Arkansas's 75 counties confirmed in 2025. If you have an ash near the house, have it checked; treatment works best before the tree is badly infested.

What does a tree risk assessment cost?

HomeGuide's 2026 national figures put a tree inspection or risk assessment at about $100 to $250 and a single-tree written report at about $150 to $450. A look at a tree as part of a free estimate for pruning or removal costs nothing.

Does cabling actually help a weak tree?

For the right tree, yes. A cable installed high in the crown limits how far two stems can spread apart in wind or ice, which reduces the chance of a split at a weak fork. It does not fix decay, and cables need to be checked every few years.
