The Tall Pines of Central Arkansas
Pine tree removal is its own kind of job in Little Rock. Loblolly pine grows fast and straight here, and many subdivisions kept the pines already on the lot or planted them close to the house. A few decades later those trees can stand 70 feet or more, with most of their weight in a small crown at the top, right over the roof. A healthy pine can live with that for decades, but when one starts to die or a storm cracks it, it needs to come down in sections, often from the top of a very tall, very straight trunk.
Bark beetles
Arkansas forestry guidance describes three groups of pine bark beetles in the state. Ips engraver beetles usually attack one tree or a few, often a tree weakened by drought, lightning or damage, and their attack can show up as one or a few limbs fading. Southern pine beetle fades the whole crown from yellow to red. Black turpentine beetles work the lower eight feet of the trunk and leave reddish pitch tubes. Look for white or cream-colored globs of pitch on the bark and fine wood dust in bark crevices or at the base. The good news, according to federal forest health surveys, is that no southern pine beetle outbreaks have been reported west of the Mississippi River in more than twenty years, so most yard problems here are Ips and turpentine beetles on stressed trees.
What to do with infested pines
The same forestry guidance says infested pines that still hold needles, green, yellow or red, should be removed, and that cut logs should not be left overnight beside healthy pines, because beetles can leave the logs and attack the living trees. Pines that have already dropped their needles have usually been vacated by the beetles. That is why we haul beetle-hit pine wood off the property or move it well away from other pines rather than stacking it in the backyard.
Lightning, wind and brown needles
A tall pine is often the tallest thing on the block, and lightning strikes are a common start to beetle trouble. Pines also snap in tornadoes and straight-line winds, and the 2023 tornado left many pines in west Little Rock with broken tops. Not every brown pine is dying, though: federal surveys found brown spot needle blight widespread in Arkansas pines, and drought can brown needles too. A close look at the bark and the crown tells the difference.
How tall pines come down
With room to fall, a pine can be felled whole, but that is rare in a subdivision. More often a climber works up the trunk removing limbs, then takes the top out and lowers the trunk in sections, using ropes to swing each piece clear of the roof. Where a pine leans over the house or is too damaged to climb, a crane can lift sections over the house instead.
Pine Work We Handle
From one dying pine to a stand of them behind the house.
Tall pines near houses
Pines 60 feet and taller taken down from the top in sections lowered clear of the roof.
Beetle-infested pines
Pines with pitch tubes, boring dust or fading crowns removed promptly, with wood kept away from healthy pines.
Lightning-struck pines
Pines with a lightning scar down the trunk checked and, when needed, removed before beetles move in.
Storm-snapped pines
Broken tops and split trunks taken down carefully, since snapped wood is under tension.
Pine stump grinding
Resin-heavy pine stumps ground below grade so the spot can be replanted or sodded.

How a Pine Removal Goes
1. Check the pine
We look for pitch tubes, boring dust, lightning scars, cracks and how much of the crown is fading.
2. Plan the drop zone
We decide whether the pine can be felled, must be sectioned, or needs a crane, and quote it in writing.
3. Take it down
Limbs off, top out, then the trunk lowered in sections clear of the house.
4. Move the wood
Pine wood hauled off or moved away from living pines, brush chipped, stump ground if you chose it.

Pine Tree Removal Questions
How much does it cost to remove a pine tree in Little Rock?
HomeGuide's 2026 national range for pine removal is about $250 to $1,600, and taller trees over 80 feet can run $1,200 to $2,500 or more. A 70-foot loblolly over a house costs more than the same tree at the back of an open lot. We price each pine in writing after seeing it.
How do I know if my pine has beetles?
Look for small white or cream globs of pitch on the bark, fine reddish-brown dust in the bark crevices or at the base, and needles fading to yellow or red. Ips beetles often fade one or a few limbs first. If you see those signs, have the tree looked at quickly, since beetles can spread to nearby pines.
Should I remove healthy pines near my house?
Not necessarily. A healthy, well-rooted pine can stand for decades. Removal makes sense when the tree is declining, leans toward the house, has a damaged top or roots, or is simply more risk than you want over a bedroom. We will tell you honestly what we see.
Can I keep the pine wood for firewood?
Pine burns fast and leaves creosote, so many people do not want it. If the tree had beetles, the wood should not be stacked near living pines. Most pine removals in Little Rock end with the wood hauled off and the brush chipped.
Why are my pine needles brown but the tree seems fine?
Needle blights such as brown spot are widespread in Arkansas pines, and drought can brown needles too. Those problems are not always fatal. If the bark shows no pitch tubes or boring dust and new growth is green, the tree may recover.
