A Mining Town's Trees

Tree Service in Bauxite brings us to one of the more distinctive towns in the region. Bauxite ore was discovered in the area in the early 1890s, and the town took its name from it. The Pittsburgh Reduction Company, later the Aluminum Company of America, bought large tracts in Saline County in 1905. Output peaked at about 6 million short tons in 1943, during World War II, and Reynolds Metals ended its refining operations in the area in 1981. Bauxite itself incorporated in 1973 and had 629 residents in 2020.

Ground that has been worked

A century of mining reshaped land around the town. Where ground was dug, filled or regraded, the soil can be thin, compacted or uneven, and trees that grew up on it sometimes have shallow, lopsided root systems. On those sites we pay close attention to:

  • How the root plate sits: raised, exposed roots or a mound on one side can signal shallow anchoring
  • Lean, and whether it is increasing
  • Signs of root rot at the base, such as mushrooms or soft wood

A tree that looks healthy above ground can still be poorly anchored below.

Rural lots, rural jobs

Bauxite sits along Arkansas Highway 183 about 14 miles southwest of Little Rock, and much of the surrounding land is wooded. Requests here tend to be practical:

  • Taking down dead trees before they fall on a house, shed or fence
  • Clearing back woods that have crept toward the yard
  • Raising limbs over driveways and gravel roads
  • Grinding stumps so a cleared area can be mowed

If you would like to keep logs for firewood, tell us and we will cut them to length.

Ash borer in the county

Saline County was among the 18 Arkansas counties where emerald ash borer had been confirmed when the statewide quarantine was set in March 2018. If you are not sure whether a tree in your yard is an ash, we can identify it. Dying ash become brittle quickly, so removal is cheaper and safer before the tree is fully dead.

Firewood and the quarantine

The quarantine lets hardwood firewood move freely inside Arkansas. Moving it out of state requires following federal rules. For most Bauxite homeowners burning wood at home, that is not an issue.

Pines on thin soil

Pines are common on the wooded ground around town, and on thin or disturbed soil they are prone to drought stress. A stressed pine invites bark beetles, and the signs are small pitch tubes or resin blobs on the bark, sawdust in bark crevices and needles fading from green to yellow to red. Once a pine has turned, it should come down before it becomes brittle, and nearby pines should be watched.

Bauxite History

  • Ore discovery. Bauxite ore was discovered in the area in the early 1890s; the General Bauxite Company mined it until 1905, when the Pittsburgh Reduction Company, later ALCOA, bought large tracts in Saline County.
  • Wartime peak. Production in the area peaked at about 6,000,000 short tons in 1943 during World War II, and Reynolds Metals ended refining operations in 1981.
  • Small town today. Bauxite incorporated as a town in 1973, covers about 3.1 square miles along Highway 183, and had 629 residents in 2020.
  • Ash borer. Saline County was among the 18 counties with confirmed emerald ash borer when Arkansas set a statewide quarantine on March 27, 2018.

Bauxite Questions

My tree's roots are sticking out of the ground. Is it unstable?

Not necessarily, but exposed roots on thin or eroded soil can mean shallow anchoring. If the tree also leans or the soil is heaving on one side, have it checked.

Can you clear an overgrown area behind my house?

Yes. We remove small trees and brush, take down dead or leaning larger trees and can grind stumps so the area can be mowed.

Do you work outside town limits?

Yes, on rural properties around Bauxite and across Saline County.

How do I tell if a tree is an ash?

Ash leaves are made of several leaflets on one stem, and the leaves and twigs grow in opposite pairs. The bark of mature ash has a tight diamond pattern. We can confirm it during a visit.

A pine turned brown in a few weeks. What happened?

Rapid browning in a pine often points to bark beetles, usually after drought or other stress. The tree is generally beyond saving by then. Removing it promptly reduces the chance of beetles moving to nearby pines and keeps the dead tree from failing.
