Backyards That Back Onto the Woods

Tree Service in Maumelle often starts at the back fence. The city, founded in 1974 and incorporated in 1985, was laid out with wooded greenbelts and about 13 miles of bike trails winding through them, plus Lake Willastein and Lake Valencia ringed by parkland. That design means a lot of homes share a property line with trees that have grown up untouched for decades. Those trees shade the yard nicely until one leans toward the roof.

Edge trees behave differently

A tree that grew at the edge of a wooded strip has spent its life reaching sideways for light. Its crown is often lopsided toward the open yard, and its roots are anchored mostly on the woods side. Wind from the north or west pushes it toward the house. When we look at a Maumelle edge tree, we check:

  • How far the crown leans past the trunk toward the house
  • Whether the soil on the woods side shows cracks or heaving
  • Dead tops or broken limbs hidden in the canopy above the trail
  • Whether the tree is actually on your lot or on common or city ground

The last point matters. Trees on greenbelt or park land are not yours to remove, even if they hang over your yard. You can generally have limbs over your side trimmed back, but taking down the tree needs the owner's say.

Lakes and the river

Maumelle sits on the Arkansas River across from Little Rock, near the Big Dam Bridge, and its two lakes are surrounded by parkland, wooden bridges and trails. Shoreline trees grow in wetter soil and tend to have shallower roots than the same species uphill. After a long, soaking rain they are the ones most likely to tip. Lakefront homeowners should keep an eye on lean changes after storms.

Maumelle's yard waste rules

The city's Public Works department picks up yard waste weekly, but with limits that matter if you prune yourself:

  • Bags or bundles must weigh 35 pounds or less
  • Bundles can be no longer than 5 feet, tied with biodegradable twine
  • Branches must be 3 inches across or less
  • Everything sits at least 3 feet from your trash cart

Anything bigger is off the weekly route. And when a contractor does the work, the city requires the contractor to remove and dispose of what it cut, except grass clippings and leaves. Our estimates include that haul-off. One perk: the city composts what it collects and offers free compost at Public Works from May to October.

A good fit for regular care

Maumelle's yards are not huge, but the trees around them are. A pruning visit every few years, especially on the trees along greenbelts and shorelines, keeps surprises down. Call (501) 457-9035 for a free on-site estimate. Get a free estimate

Maumelle Questions

The tree hanging over my yard is on the greenbelt. Can I trim it?

In general you can have branches over your side of the line cut back, as long as the work does not kill the tree. Removing the tree itself is up to whoever owns that land. If it looks dangerous, contact the city or the owner of the common area, and we can document what we see.

Will Maumelle pick up the branches from my tree removal?

No. The city requires contractors to haul away the material from their work. Branches you cut yourself can go out if they meet the 5-foot, 3-inch and 35-pound limits.

Where do I get the free compost?

Maumelle Public Works on Cogdell Drive offers free compost from May through October. The number is 501-851-2812.

My lakefront willow is leaning more each year. What should I do?

A slow, steady lean in wet soil usually means the roots are losing grip. Have it looked at before a storm decides for you. Sometimes a reduction buys time; often removal is the safer call near a house or dock.
