A City That Runs Its Own Utility
Tree Service in North Little Rock is shaped by one thing many cities do not have: a municipally owned electric department. NLR Electric sets its own trimming schedule, its own rules for service lines and its own process for disconnecting power so a homeowner can have a tree worked on. Knowing how it operates saves days of back-and-forth on any job near wires.
How NLR Electric handles trees
Each year NLR Electric picks the areas it will trim and notifies customers with door hangers, sometimes weeks ahead and sometimes only days. Its crews and contractors clear vegetation in the clearing zone along the lines and haul away the wood from that preventive work. Three points matter to homeowners:
- NLR Electric does not trim trees around the service wire that runs from the pole to your house.
- With at least 48 hours' notice, it will disconnect that service line at no charge so the tree can be pruned safely. The number is 501-975-8888.
- Storm debris is not the utility's to remove. It only takes away what it cut during routine maintenance.
When we book a job that needs the line dropped, we schedule around that 48-hour window.
Burns Park and the 2023 tornado
The March 31, 2023 tornado crossed the Arkansas River from west Little Rock into North Little Rock. Burns Park took some of the worst of it, with the National Weather Service reporting at least 10,000 trees lost there, and the Amboy and Indian Hills neighborhoods were hit too. One person died in North Little Rock. Yards near that path still have trees with old wounds and half-healed breaks. If you are not sure whether a tree survived that storm structurally, an inspection costs far less than a failure.
Green waste, the NLR way
The city picks up yard waste the day after regular garbage. Its definition of green waste is broad and includes branches, stumps and sawdust. Green waste can go to the curb at any time but not into the street, and must sit at least three feet from bulk items or garbage. A first failure to separate it brings a written notice; a second adds a $50 fee to your utility bill. On our jobs, debris removal is written into the estimate, so you are not left with a pile at the curb unless you want one.
Neighborhoods we work in
North Little Rock runs from the historic Argenta district and Baring Cross near the river to Park Hill, Lakewood, Indian Hills, Crystal Hill and Overbrook. Older streets in Argenta and Park Hill have big trees close to houses and lines. Lakewood has lake edges and mature shade trees. Northern subdivisions have newer plantings that benefit from early structural pruning.

North Little Rock Questions
NLR Electric left a door hanger. Do I need to do anything?
Usually not, unless you have a special request about a particular tree. NLR asks customers with requests to contact it as soon as the hanger arrives. Its crews trim for line clearance, not for looks or privacy.
Will the city pick up a stump if I leave it at the curb?
North Little Rock lists stumps as green waste, but large stumps and logs are heavy to set out. Most homeowners have us grind the stump in place or include hauling in the estimate.
Who cleans up a tree that the storm dropped on my service line?
Call NLR Electric first so the line is made safe. The utility does not remove storm debris, so once the power side is handled, the tree is the homeowner's to clear, and that is where we come in.
Do you work in Park Hill and Lakewood?
Yes, along with Argenta, Indian Hills, Crystal Hill, Overbrook and the rest of the city.
