A Growing Town on the Hills
Tree Service in Cabot is tied to how the town has grown. Cabot is the largest city in Lonoke County, and its population rose from 23,776 in 2010 to 26,569 in 2020. It sits in the county's northern third, where the land turns into rolling hills at the edge of the Ozarks rather than the flat prairie and Delta farther south. Many Cabot neighborhoods were cut out of wooded hillsides, so homes often have a ring of original trees around a cleared lot.
A family town
Census figures show a household size of about 2.63 people and more than 28% of residents under 18. Owner-occupancy is about 68.8%, and the median owner-occupied home value was $207,300 in the 2020-2024 survey. In practice, that means yards with swing sets, trampolines and play areas under trees. Deadwood over a play area is one of the first things we point out on a Cabot estimate.
Trees left after building
When a lot is cleared for a house, the trees left standing often lose part of their roots to grading, trenching and heavy equipment. The damage shows years later as thinning crowns and dead tops, usually on the side facing the house or drive. If a tree in a newer Cabot subdivision has been declining from the top down for a couple of seasons, construction damage is a likely cause, and the tree should be checked before it becomes a hazard.
Cabot's storm record
Cabot has been on the receiving end more than once:
- On March 29, 1976, a tornado struck downtown, killed five people and destroyed several buildings. City Plaza was created afterward.
- On Christmas 2012, the National Weather Service measured 10 inches of snow in Cabot.
- On March 31, 2023, the EF3 tornado that crossed Little Rock, North Little Rock, Sherwood and Jacksonville finally weakened over the southern side of Cabot.
Hills catch wind, and the trees at ridgelines and lot edges take the brunt.
Pines and hardwoods together
Hillside lots around Cabot usually carry a mix of pines and hardwoods. Pines are prone to snapping in ice and wet snow and to beetle attack when stressed by drought; oaks and hickories are sturdier but grow heavy limbs over roofs. We treat them differently: pines are checked for resin streaks, thinning crowns and dead tops, while hardwoods get their long, heavy limbs shortened.

Cabot by the Numbers
- Ozark-edge terrain. The northern third of Lonoke County, including the Cabot area, is rolling hills at the edge of the Ozarks, unlike the flat Grand Prairie and Delta to the south.
- Families and owners. Cabot's owner-occupied housing rate is 68.8% and the median owner-occupied home value is $207,300, with 2.63 people per household and 28.2% of residents under 18 (Census ACS 2020-2024).
- 1976 tornado. A tornado struck downtown Cabot on March 29, 1976, killing five people and destroying multiple buildings; City Plaza was created afterward.
- 2012 snow and 2023 tornado. Cabot recorded 10.0 inches of snow on December 25-26, 2012, and the March 31, 2023 EF3 tornado weakened on the southern side of Cabot at the end of its 34-mile path.

Cabot Questions
My oak has been dying from the top since the house was built. Can it be saved?
Sometimes. If the decline is slow and most of the crown is still healthy, removing deadwood and protecting the root zone from more traffic can help. If more than about half the crown is dead, removal is usually the safer choice near a house.
Can you prune the tree over our kids' play set?
Yes. Removing dead and weak limbs over play areas is one of the most common requests we get in Cabot, and it is usually a quick job.
Do you grind stumps on sloped yards?
Yes. On steep ground we position the grinder carefully and may work from the uphill side. Let us know about the slope when you call.
Which trees on a hillside lot are most at risk in storms?
Trees standing alone at the top of a slope or at the edge of a cleared area. They grew up sheltered by the woods and now take wind head-on.
A pine in my yard has little blobs of sap on the bark. Is that a problem?
Small resin masses scattered up the trunk can be a sign of bark beetles, especially on a pine stressed by drought or root damage. If the needles are also fading or the top is thinning, have it checked soon, because infested pines can decline quickly.
