Jacksonville Yards After a Hard Few Years

Tree Service in Jacksonville has seen a lot of storm work lately. The March 31, 2023 tornado cut a path about three miles long through the city, and the National Weather Service listed Jacksonville among the places with the worst damage on that 34-mile track. Many households here also have a short horizon in one place: Little Rock Air Force Base brings families who rent or own for a few years and want problem trees dealt with before they move or sell.

Snow load is the other risk

The Christmas 2012 storm dropped 10.5 inches of snow at Jacksonville, a little more than Little Rock got. Wet snow piles onto evergreen branches and onto any hardwood that still holds its leaves late in the year. Limbs with included bark or long, heavy horizontal reach break first. Pruning for snow is about shortening those levers and removing the weakest unions, not about thinning the whole tree.

Setting out limbs for the city

If you trim smaller branches yourself, Jacksonville's guidelines ask for:

  • Limbs no longer than 6 feet and no more than 6 inches across
  • Limbs, leaves and clippings in their own pile, apart from other debris
  • Piles kept clear of fences, cars, mailboxes, signs, utility meter boxes, cable risers and overhead service lines
  • No windrowed leaves except when the vacuum trucks are running

The city also says plainly that it cannot grind stumps, rocks or root masses. Stumps need a grinder, which is one of the jobs we do most often here.

Lines, the base and older streets

First Electric Cooperative is headquartered in Jacksonville, and it serves parts of Pulaski and Lonoke counties alongside Entergy Arkansas, so check your bill to see whose lines run by your house. Either way, the wire from the pole to the house is generally yours to keep clear, and the utility can disconnect it for safe tree work. The city itself has deep roots: it was named in 1870 for Nicholas Jackson, who deeded railroad right-of-way, and grew quickly after the Arkansas Ordnance Plant was built in 1941 and the base followed in 1955. Neighborhoods from those decades now have trees 60 or more years old.

How we handle a Jacksonville job

1. We walk the property and mark each tree to be worked. 2. You get a written estimate that says how debris will be handled: chipped and hauled, left as firewood, or cut to city size for curbside pickup. 3. We schedule around your household, including PCS moves and closing dates when timing matters. 4. Stumps are ground and the area is raked out.

  • City limb guidelines. Jacksonville asks that limbs be no longer than 6 feet or wider than 6 inches, stacked separately and kept clear of meters, cable risers and service lines; it does not grind stumps or root masses.
  • Electric cooperative headquarters. First Electric Cooperative, organized in 1937, is headquartered in Jacksonville and serves portions of Pulaski, Lonoke, Saline, Faulkner and other counties over about 10,373 miles of line.

Jacksonville Questions

Will the city haul away my stump?

No. Jacksonville's guidelines say the city cannot grind stumps, rocks or root masses. Grinding the stump in place is the usual fix, and the grindings can be left to fill the hole or hauled off.

We are moving soon. Can you handle a tree before closing?

Tell us the date when you call. We can usually fit an inspection and estimate in quickly, and the written estimate gives buyers and agents a clear record of the work.

Is my power from First Electric or Entergy?

Your bill will say. Both serve parts of the area. For tree work near the line to your house, call your provider to arrange a temporary disconnect if one is needed.

Which trees should I worry about before the next big snow?

Look at evergreens with long horizontal branches over the roof or drive, and at any hardwood with a narrow V-shaped fork. Those are the ones that split under wet snow. Shortening the heaviest limbs in fall is cheaper than a winter emergency call.
