The Rule That Shapes Every Sherwood Job

Tree Service in Sherwood comes with a clear city rule: when a tree service removes a tree, it has to haul away all of the material, including limbs, trunks, logs and stumps. The city will pick up a homeowner's own brush, but not a contractor's removal debris. So when you compare quotes for work in Sherwood, check that hauling is included. Ours always lists it.

What the city will and will not take

Sherwood Public Works collects yard waste weekly, the day after household garbage. If you are doing small pruning yourself, here is what it expects: 1. Set out three separate piles, or nothing gets collected. 2. Limbs can be no longer than 8 feet and no thicker than 8 inches. 3. Leaves and grass go in bags. Between November 1 and January 31 you can rake leaves to the curb for the vacuum truck instead, but never into the gutter or street. 4. Stumps and logs are not accepted.

Anything bigger than that, or anything a tree company cut, has to leave on the contractor's truck.

A city that grew in stages

Sherwood incorporated as a town on April 22, 1948, became a first-class city in 1971, and added Gravel Ridge in a 2008 annexation along Highway 107. That history shows in the trees. Older parts of town around Sylvan Hills, where the country club golf course dates to 1927, have tall, mature hardwoods. Newer subdivisions and Gravel Ridge have younger trees and wooded lot edges left from clearing. Old trees need weight reduction and deadwood removal; young ones benefit from early structural pruning so they do not develop split leaders.

March 31, 2023

The EF3 tornado that started in west Little Rock continued through North Little Rock and into Sherwood that afternoon, and about half the city lost power. Many trees that stayed standing took twisting damage. Signs worth checking now include cracks at the base of large limbs, bark peeling away in strips, and crowns that leafed out thin on one side the following spring.

Power lines

Parts of Sherwood are served by NLR Electric, which lists Sherwood Planning among its contacts. NLR Electric does not trim around the service wire to your house, but it will disconnect that line at no charge with 48 hours' notice. In Entergy areas, the same basic rule applies: the service drop is the homeowner's to manage. Check your bill to see which company serves your street, and tell us when you call.

Sherwood Rules and Background

  • Contractor haul-off. Sherwood requires a tree service to haul away all removed material, including limbs, trunks, logs and stumps; the city only collects homeowner yard waste.
  • Curbside size limits. Limbs set out for city pickup can be no longer than 8 feet or thicker than 8 inches, in three separate piles, collected the day after garbage.
  • Leaf season. From November 1 through January 31 residents may rake leaves to the curb for vacuum pickup instead of bagging; raking into gutters or the street can bring a citation.
  • Growth over time. Sherwood incorporated in 1948, annexed Gravel Ridge in 2008 along Highway 107, and had 32,731 residents and 13,764 households in 2020.
  • 2023 tornado. The March 31, 2023 tornado passed through Sherwood after touching down near Little Rock, and about half of Sherwood lost power.

Sherwood Questions

Can I put the logs from a tree removal at the curb in Sherwood?

No. The city does not accept stumps or logs, and debris from a tree service has to be hauled off by that company. Make sure any quote you accept includes it.

I trimmed some branches myself. How should I set them out?

Cut them to 8 feet or shorter and 8 inches or thinner, keep them in their own pile separate from bagged leaves and bulky items, and set them out for the day after garbage pickup.

Do you work in Gravel Ridge?

Yes. Gravel Ridge has been part of Sherwood since the 2008 annexation, and we work there as well as in Sylvan Hills and the rest of the city.

My oak looked fine after 2023 but is dropping big dead limbs now. Why?

Twisting and cracking from high wind can take a few seasons to show. A limb that was split internally may keep leafing out until decay or the next hard wind finishes it. A climber can check the unions up close and remove the damaged wood before it falls.
