Young Households, Young Trees

Tree Service in Ward is often a first tree job for a new homeowner. Ward has become the second most populous city in Lonoke County, growing from 2,580 people in 2000 to 6,052 in 2020. The Census Bureau puts the share of residents 65 and older at just 7.8%, far below the area as a whole, and about 69% of homes are owner-occupied. Plenty of Ward homeowners are buying their first house, and with it their first big tree.

What to watch in your first few years

You do not need to be an arborist to spot the warning signs:

  • Dead branches that stay bare in summer, especially over the roof or driveway
  • Cracks in the trunk or where big limbs join
  • Mushrooms or conks growing from the base or roots
  • New lean, especially with cracked or raised soil on one side
  • Limbs touching the roof, the gutters or the wire to the house

Any one of these is worth a professional look. Two or more together usually means work is due.

Planting the next generation

Newer Ward lots often have few trees, or only young ones. Planting is the cheap part; placement is where people go wrong. Keep large-growing trees well away from foundations, septic lines and the overhead service wire, and do not plant tall species under power lines. A few minutes of planning avoids an expensive removal 20 years from now. We are glad to give an opinion during an estimate.

A compact city

Ward covers about 4.3 square miles and is divided into three wards that run northeast to southwest. Most jobs here are on standard suburban lots, which keeps access simple and costs reasonable. The median owner-occupied home value in the 2020-2024 Census survey was $189,100; for most owners, keeping a tree from falling on the house is about protecting the biggest investment they have.

When the wire to the house is involved

In central Arkansas, the electric utility trims its main lines but leaves the service drop to the house to the homeowner. Utilities including Entergy Arkansas will disconnect that line at no charge so a tree company can work. If limbs are on your service wire, tell us when you call so we can set that up.

Fence-line trees

Many Ward lots share a back fence with neighbors, and trees often grow right on the line. If a tree straddles the boundary, it is usually shared, and both owners should agree before it comes down. If it grows on a neighbor's side but hangs over yours, you can generally have overhanging limbs trimmed back to the line, as long as the cuts do not kill the tree. A quick conversation with the neighbor before work starts saves a lot of trouble.

Ward Questions

How do I know if a tree is worth saving?

If most of the crown is healthy, the trunk is solid and the roots are anchored, pruning is usually enough. Large dead sections, hollow trunks or root problems point toward removal. We explain the reasoning either way.

How close to the house can I plant a shade tree?

For large shade trees, give them plenty of room, generally 20 feet or more from the foundation, and keep them out from under the power and service lines.

Is stump grinding worth it on a small lot?

Usually. A ground stump lets you mow, plant or lay sod right over the spot, and it removes a tripping hazard. The grinding takes far less time than most people expect.

Can you remove a tree that is half on my neighbor's side?

Yes, with both owners' agreement. A tree on the boundary is usually shared property, so we ask that both of you sign off on the plan before any removal.

Do you haul everything away?

That is the default, and the estimate says so in writing. If you would like to keep some wood or the chips for landscape beds, tell us and we will leave them where you want.
